Encore Learning Presents: Ken Avis' Music Stars, Guitars & Roadhouse Bars

About this event

We look forward to seeing you in person!

Musician and historian Ken Avis returns to Encore Learning to celebrate the release of his new book, the first ever written about the History of Popular Music in Northern Virginia. Get ready for another audio-visual storytelling of the sound of our suburbs!

You think you know the sounds of Northern Virginia? Think again. Beyond the political churn of DC, in the heart of the expanding suburbs, lies a century-long musical legacy that reflects the landscape of American popular music. Smoke-filled roadhouses hosted country and bluegrass; hidden basements reverberated with the explosive sound of punk.

Music Stars, Guitars & Roadhouse Bars – Rooted in Northern Virgina brings a rich tapestry of jazz, country, rock, and soul and uncovers the vibrant, forgotten stories of local innovators and legends who played their way out of NoVA and into music history. Step into a rich cultural heritage hidden in plain sight. It’s time to listen to the suburbs.

Ken’s book will be available for purchase and book signing.

REGISTRATION RECOMMENDED. First-come, first-served seating. By registering, you will receive event updates.
