About this event
Join us for an engaging talk with accomplished author T. Walter Herbert, with the topic of his new book, Prophets of Democracy: Herman Melville and the Apache Redeemer .
Both the great American writer and Nochaydelklinne, the now-forgotten Apache leader, were prophets of democracy. They both protested the violation of democratic principle that took place when native lands were commandeered by force.
Melville was alerted to this offense when his whaleship visited islands in the South Pacific where both France and the United States were taking possession of islands that are now — respectively -- French Polynesia and the state of Hawaii. Nochaydelklinne faced the onslaught of continental expansion when it reached Arizona in the late 19th century.
Both men paid a price for announcing prophetic truth. It cost Melville his hopes of making a living as a writer; and it cost Nochaydelklinne his life.
