About this event
Dr. Stacey Close will discuss the roots and legacy of the Bill of Rights. In 1787, the U.S. Constitution was sent to the states for ratification, prompting a debate over the rights protected by the Constitution. James Madison addressed these objections by drafting the first 10 amendments, collectively known as the Bill of Rights, which were adopted in 1791. The program will explore how the rights protected in the first 10 amendments — including freedom of speech, press, religion, petition and assembly — connect to the “unalienable rights” referenced in the Declaration of Independence.
