From Swastika to Jim Crow (2000): Screening and Discussion

About this event

This is a free Adult School event. Registration is required.

Explore an influential, little-known chapter in the history of Black-Jewish relations in America. We'll be screening a documentary film, From Swastika to Jim Crow, based on a book by the same title by Gabrielle Simon Edgcomb. It tells the story of German-Jewish refugees, who, expelled from their homeland by Hitler and the Nazis, found new lives and careers at historically Black colleges and universities in the American South, influencing a whole generation of Black students and professionals. After the screening, Dr. Lillie Johnson Edwards and Rabbi Julie Roth, will discuss the film's significance. Dr. Edwards is a Drew University Professor Emerita of History and African American Studies. Rabbi Roth leads Congregation Shomrei Emunah of Montclair, NJ.

This program is co-sponsored by Shomrei Emunah ( https://shomrei.org/ ) and The Mark Montclair https://themarkmtc.org ).
