About this event
Join us for a visual exploration of the Venetian sites that define the Jewish experience in the lagoon. While Venice gave the world the word "ghetto," the reality behind the walls was a vibrant crossroads of culture. This talk focuses on the three campos and five historic synagogues where a melting pot of languages and traditions once thrived.
We will venture beyond the city center to the quiet, little-known Jewish cemetery at the Lido and examine the city’s soul through its writers—from the 17th-century poetry of Sara Copio Sullam and the wit of Rabbi Leone Modena to the contemporary perspectives of Shaul Bassi and Riccardo Calimani.
Drawing on new research from Florida Atlantic University, this presentation offers an intimate look at how a small community left an indelible mark on one of the world’s most famous cities.
The Thursday Night Speaker series is sponsored by the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library.
