About this event
Join us for a bonus in-person session of the seminar series hosted by MIT Media Lab's Advancing Humans with AI (AHA) research program! This event features Cathy O'Neil, mathematician, author of Weapons of Math Destruction, and CEO of ORCAA, an algorithmic auditing company. 📅 Thursday, November 5, 11:00am–12:00pm ET 📍 MIT Media Lab, E14, Multipurpose Room Abstract Much of the public conversation about AI risk centers on the alignment problem. Cathy O'Neil considers it ill-posed and probably irrelevant. In this bonus session of the AHA Seminar Series, she turns to the threats that are already here or arriving soon: class-action lawsuits, North Korean AI agent hacking swarms, and what they mean for the internet and for our peace of mind. Her question is a practical one: how do we prepare? We hope you join us for an intriguing seminar and engaging Q&A! Speaker Bio Cathy O'Neil earned a PhD in Mathematics from Harvard University and was a math professor at Barnard College before moving to the private sector, working as a quant at the hedge fund D.E. Shaw and as a data scientist in New York's start-up scene. She is the author of Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy (2016) and The Shame Machine: Who Profits in the New Age of Humiliation (2022). She is the CEO of ORCAA, an algorithmic auditing company, and a founder and board member of OCEAN, a non-profit defending the public interest against algorithmic harm.
