About this event

Since 2023, a working group of UGA faculty, graduate students, and a local historian have sought to clarify connections between UGA and Native American dispossession in the Athens area and beyond. The authors will present their work, followed by a panel of invited discussants, and audience Q&A. The event marks the launch of an online StoryMap, which will serve as a crucial resource to help the UGA community understand the entanglement of the University’s founding with Native removal and open a conversation about our accountability to this history. This event is open to UGA and the Athens community. Presenters: Stevn Scurry, Local Historian; Mariana Matos, Ph.D. Candidate, UGA Anthropology and Integrative Conservation; and Laura German, Professor, UGA Department of Anthropology Panelists: RaeLynn Butler, Secretary of Culture and Humanities, Muscogee (Creek) Nation; Beau Carroll, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI); Constance Owl, Doctoral Student in the UGA Department of History and enrolled member of the EBCI; James Owen, Interim Director, UGA Institute of Native American Studies.
