American Mahjong Open Play

About this event

This is a program where adults can play American Mahjong. All levels are welcome - from beginner to advanced!

Come practice your skills in a friendly, relaxed setting. While we won’t have formal teaching at these sessions, it is the perfect space for players of all levels to connect and play. Please note that you must already know the rules and how to play a full game independently to join the fun!

Tiles, mats, and cards are all provided. Just bring yourself! We currently have both 2025 and 2026 cards available.

American Mahjong is a four-player tile game featuring Chinese symbols. The goal is to be the first player to match your tiles to a specific combination on a scorecard by picking and discarding.

Mahjong is not only fun, but it also offers excellent cognitive benefits. It is known to help improve memory, sharpen concentration, and support brain health. Come enjoy the mental and social perks of this inherently social game!

This program is supported by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation.
