About this event

One of the many tools used in conservation is translocation – moving individual animals or plants to a new area. They can be moved to establish new populations, increase existing numbers, or to remove an ongoing threat. While it can bring many benefits, translocation requires careful planning to ensure individuals thrive in their new habitat. This is especially true with endangered black rhinos, so conservation partners carefully study how animals behave, their genetic health, and source populations prior to conducting translocations. Listen to our own Dr. Liz Kierepka, as she talks about her work with the species. Teen Science Cafés bring teens together in an informal setting to learn about science and technology, on the first Friday every month during the school year. Each event includes a presentation, related activity, Q&A session and time to socialize with other participants. This is a free program recommended for ages 11–17. Cafés will be held in person at the Daily Planet Cafe and streamed live on YouTube. About the presenter: – Dr. Liz Kierepka is the Head of our Genomics and Microbiology Research Lab and Associate Research Professor at North Carolina State University. Dr. Kierepka is involved with multiple projects within mammals including evaluating genomics of island Peromyscus mice, rabies and urban adaptation in raccoons, population estimation of coyotes on the Outer Banks, and pedigree reconstruction in black rhinos. –
