About this event
In this guided creative writing workshop with poet and educator Petra Salazar. Step away from the "Standard English" lens and into the rhythm of the porch, the kitchen table, and the corner store. In this workshop, we will dive deep into the sophisticated grammars and unique textures of diverse English dialects, honoring them not as "slang," but as rigorous and expressive systems of communication. By framing our narratives for a trusted friend rather than an outsider, we eliminate the need to explain, justify, or code-switch, allowing the authentic music of our natural voices to resonate. Through collaborative analysis and creative exercises, you’ll learn to lean into the specific syntax and soul of your community’s language, crafting stories where the dialect isn't just a stylistic choice—it’s the heartbeat of the piece. No experience necessary. All levels welcome—bring a notebook and pen.
