Merry Go Round
“Where is the Jim Crow section
On this merry-go-round,
Mister, cause I want to ride? ..."
---by Langston Hughes
Five Howard University students rode a segregated carousel in 1960, inspiring one of the earliest organized civil rights protests in U.S. history. Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round reveals the untold story of the Bannockburn and Cabin John communities, whose united efforts energized by a new generation of Civil Rights leaders, helped desegregate Glen Echo Park and shaped future Civil Rights actions.
Come hear the voices of those who lived it. Let this story be told and let us honor the legacy forged in the summer of 1960 at Glen Echo Park in Montgomery County, Maryland.
