About this event

Amateur historian and lifelong Arlingtonian Eric Dobson will present photographs of Arlington he took from decades ago and discuss how they reflect the time they were taken and inform what we see today

In 1981, a class at what was then Washington-Lee High School assigned students to “create something.” Instead of a quilt or painting, Eric Dobson chose to develop a photo essay on Arlington County. What did a 16-year-old consider important? How did he complete this assignment? How do his images of neighborhoods and buildings appear today? This is not an ordinary set of “then and now” photos. Come hear Dobson talk about why he took particular photos and what is going on with the same scenes today. He will discuss how some things have changed - but not really.

Eric Dobson recently retired after a thirty-year career in urban planning and economic development. He has served on the Arlington County Planning Commission and has been a member of the Cherrydale Citizens Association, Clarendon Alliance, and Preservation Arlington.
