About this event

Join us for a meet and greet with local author, Paul Bastante. Paul is the author of the new book, Preakness .

In 2018, Paul Basante produced, wrote, and narrated the historical documentary Hills and Valleys: A Journey Through Wayne, NJ , a film exploring the people, places, and stories that shaped the township.

While researching that project, he uncovered a remarkable piece of history hiding in plain sight: the true origin of the Preakness Stakes name. The story traces back to Milton Sanford, a 19th-century textile magnate and Thoroughbred breeder whose champion horse, Preakness, lived right here in Wayne at Preakness Farms.

That discovery became the foundation for Preakness, a nonfiction narrative that connects Wayne's local heritage to one of the most famous races in American sport.

A proud US Navy veteran, Paul is also the founder of The AgeWise Institute™ and host of The AgeWise Podcast. He lives in Vernon, NJ, and is available for speaking engagements on the history behind the Preakness.

Preakness: Love, Tragedy, and the Birth of an American Racing Legend by Paul Basante

Inspired by the true story of Preakness, an American horse-racing legend! Milton Sanford built business empires, watched them fall, then rebuilt them. But his greatest success came when he purchased a young racehorse. From a first-place win at Pimlico Racetrack, where an annual stakes race is still held in his honor, to a tragic ending that would change animal welfare laws worldwide, is an unforgettable tale of the 19th-century American Dream.
