The story follows Tita de la Garza, the youngest daughter of a traditional family, who is condemned by family custom from birth to remain single and care for her mother, Mamá Elena, until her death. When Tita falls in love with Pedro Múzquiz, her mother opposes the relationship and forbids her from marrying. To remain close to her, Pedro marries Tita's older sister, Rosaura. This condemns Tita to a life of repressed love, with the kitchen serving as both the setting for and a metaphor of her emotions.
