About this event

Join us for a dynamic educational performance featuring The Nu Haven Kapelye , Connecticut’s largest klezmer ensemble!

In this lively program, the Kapelye will bring the vibrant world of klezmer music to life through spirited Eastern European Jewish melodies, engaging storytelling, and audience participation. Listeners will discover the cultural roots and historical journey of klezmer - from its origins in shtetl celebrations to its revival in modern American communities - through a mix of traditional tunes, Yiddish folk songs, and contemporary arrangements. Along the way, the performers will share insights into the instruments, rhythms, and improvisational techniques that define the genre, making the music accessible and meaningful for both newcomers and long-time fans.

The Nu Haven Kapelye is a vibrant, multi-generational klezmer ensemble based in the New Haven, Connecticut. Since its formation in 1998, the kapelye (a Yiddish word-meaning a group of musicians) has made it its mission to preserve, reinterpret and celebrate the rich heritage of Eastern European Jewish celebratory music while while infusing it with fresh energy, big-band influence, jazz, rhythm & blues and community collaboration.

Founded when a dedicated group of local musicians came together to offer a December 25th Jewish-music concert for the greater New Haven community, the Kapelye has grown from a seasonal event into the largest klezmer ensemble in Southern New England. Members include professional musicians, students, and enthusiastic community players of all ages who come together each year to make and share the music they love.
