About this event

Screening of Hunger for Truth: The Rhea Clyman Story, a documentary directed by Andrew Tkach that tells the story of journalist Rhea Clyman's coverage of the Holodomor, a 1932 to 1933 starvation campaign by the Soviet government that deliberately withdrew and confiscated all food resources from agricultural areas in Ukraine and Russia, which killed millions of people. The film is based on the articles by Clyman, who traveled to the Soviet Union in the early 1930s, risking her life while witnessing the starving Ukrainian heartland during Stalin's state-sponsored famine. She was expelled from the U.S.S.R. for investigating Arctic labor camps and the horrors of collectivization. To make the film, Tkach blended archival footage of Clyman with footage of contemporary events, including the story of the family of Serhii Hlondar, a soldier who was captured and is still being held by the Russian Federation. The film was shot at the request of the Canadian-Ukrainian Foundation in cooperation with the Babylon-13 association. Presented in partnership with the Ukrainian National Women's League of America.
