Long Island's Institutional Cemeteries

About this event

Uncover the often-forgotten history of Long Island’s institutional cemeteries, where thousands of individuals from Long Island's state hospitals, almshouses, and related institutions were laid to rest—many in numbered or unmarked graves. This program explores the history of these cemeteries, the significant preservation challenges they face today, and the ongoing efforts to document these sites, recover identities, and ensure that those buried are honored with dignity.
