About this event
Please join us as Ray Rauth leads a discussion of James Joyce’s “The Dead,” the final and longest of the stories in his collection Dubliners; at over 50 pages, it’s really more of a novella. Its centerpiece is a holiday dinner party during Christmas season on Twelfth Night with various conversations and interactions amongst the attendees illuminating themes of love, loss, life and death. The main character Gabriel Conroy may be a sort of self-portrait of the author with some suggesting that Greta Conroy could have been modeled on Joyce’s own wife Nora. As with most Joycean fiction, numerous vignettes illustrating aspects of Irish identity make their appearances. T.S. Eliot said “'The Dead' was “one of the greatest short stories ever written in the English language.” The 1987 film adaptation directed by John Huston and starring Angelica Huston was a critical success. This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240.
