Beyond Happy Ever After: Reading German Culture Through the Lens of the Brothers Grimm

Long before they were sanitized into children’s bedtime stories, the fairy tales compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm served as vivid snapshots of 19th-century German life, values, and anxieties. This lecture explores how recurrent themes—from dark, untamed forests to strict moral codes and agrarian survival—reflect the shifting cultural identity and social realities of a uniting nation. Attendees will gain a fresh perspective on familiar tales, uncovering the subtle historical truths hidden within the folklore. Presented by Alexander Clemente.
