About this event
Excommunication was originally intended as a severe, rarely imposed punishment that excluded offenders from the sacraments, society, and certain legal rights. Over time, however, it became a routine tool used for political, legal, and personal ends. Historian Charlotte Whatley argues that English bishops increasingly relied on excommunication to resist royal authority, provoking conflict with King Edward III. The Crown ultimately weakened its coercive power, reinforcing the supremacy of English common law.
