About this event
Diwali (or Deepavali meaning “rows of lighted lamps”) is one of the largest holidays celebrated in India and parts of South Asia. Widely known as the “festival of lights,” Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains all marking different historical events as the origins for the holiday with the common theme of good overcoming evil or light overcoming darkness. Diwali traditionally involves lighting oil lamps (“diyas”) in homes, creating rangoli designs in the streets, lighting fireworks, and eating large feasts with family and friends including sweets known as ‘mithai.’ The festival lasts five days and is typically celebrated in October or November, depending on the position of the moon.
Come learn about and celebrate Diwali at the library with the Duke AAPI Affinity Group – we’ll read books on the festival followed by a few arts and crafts activities!
