About this event

Join us for a family friendly Chinese language film. This program works to provide Chinese families with an environment where their culture is celebrated and appreciated through films. Each film will be screened in either Mandarin or Cantonese with English subtitles. November's film is the epic fantasy Creation of the Gods: Kingdom of Storms (2023), directed by Wuershan and starring an ensemble cast including Fei Xiang, Li Xuejian, Huang Bo, Yu Shi, Chen Muchi, Narana Erdyneeva, and Xia Yu. The film is an adaptation of the classical 16th century Investiture of the Gods written during the Ming Dynasty. Set during a ficitonalized account of the decline the ancient Shang Dynasty in the second millennium BCE, Creation of the Gods mixes ancient Chinese history, mythology, Buddhism, and Taoism. The tyrannical and corrupt king Yin Shou of Shang accuses the dukes of the four directions of treason and orders that their sons execute them. During the unrest, it is revealed that Shou's favored consort was possessed by a malevolent fox-spirit working for the ruin of the dynasty. Rebellion against Shou, alternately aided and hindered by interested gods and demons, brews. This monthly event is completely free, and refreshments will be provided! This event is cosponsored by the OCA-WHV.
